Emergency Evacuation March 29, 2010

Posted by rshort in : 6-Operations , trackback

As parents, our children’s safety is often on our minds and affects our decisions about the types of places our children go or activities they participate in.  But the church is one of those places many of us don’t ever consider being a place where an emergency could occur.  Do you know what would happen if there were a major emergency at MBC during services and we needed to evacuate immediately?  Did your heart just skip a beat in panic at not knowing the answer to this question?

We want you to know that the MBC staff, and we in Kid’s Quest, have this concern on our minds as well so we have established a building evacuation plan to safely exit all children in our care during services from the building.  The first thing our staff and volunteer leaders would do is escort all children from the building immediately.  We have pre-mapped primary and secondary routes for exiting which are displayed on the wall of every classroom if you ever wish to review them.  Each age group is escorted to a designated holding area outside the building (see below).

We ask that you, parents, proceed to your nearest emergency exit and locate your children outside the building in their designated holding areas as opposed to running directly to their classrooms.  We understand the desire to check on and retrieve your children immediately, however, moving in the opposite direction of everyone trying to exit congests the hallways and inhibits our ability to safely and quickly exit.

If you happen to already be in the same area as your child, please be aware that our security check-out procedures still stand and we will not check children out before exiting the building.  You may walk with the class to the holding area and when we’ve been given approval by emergency personnel to dismiss children, you will be permitted to check out by showing your security receipt.  The main reasons we need to await approval from emergency personnel to check your children out is that families trying to immediately leave the grounds can endanger those still exiting the building into the roadway and parking lots and congest the areas where emergency vehicles and personnel may need to go.  A Kid’s Quest staff member in each holding area will have an emergency radio with them to keep us in contact with emergency personnel and those in the other Kid’s Quest holding areas.

Below is the list of the designated evacuatoin holding areas:

Saturday 6:30 pm:

Sunday 9:00 am, 10:45 am, & 12:30 pm:
