Missions Project Update July 6, 2009
Posted by rshort in : 3-Missions Projects, 6-Operations , trackback“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: “He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” 2 Corinthians 9:6-14 (NIV)
Below are the results of our first quarter of Missions Projects. We encourage you to share with your children the results of their prayers and gifts. We also reccommend emphasizing that while a great many children in need will be served by their monetary gifts, giving to God is a form of worship and not about giving to a cause. Our objective in providing your children with these missions project opportunities to give is not for the purpose of raising money for these causes but rather to teach our children the Biblical principle of giving to God via the church and to provide tangible ways for them to learn how to be givers in accordance with God’s Word.
January: Our children gave $1564.71 to God to be added in with the $55,000 raised at The Rock Student Ministries’ New Year’s Eve event for a total of $56,564.71. This gift was given to an orphanage in the Dominican Republic to be used to purchase Bibles, school supplies, food, housing, and a van. Please pray for the high school students who will be traveling to the orphangae this summer to serve on a missions trip.
Feburary: Our children gave $1030.38 to God to be used to purchase school supplies for children in Daybreak, an MBC ministry that serves children in the Lincoln Heights area of D.C.
March: Our children gave $4092.87 to God to be used to support a Bible and Sports camp at an orphanage in Demidov, Russia this summer. Not only did God provide enough to cover the camp supplies but also support for the Global Impact missions team that will be serving at the orphanage this summer.
April: Our children gave $928.95 to God to be used to purchase food for the Daily Bread Food Pantry, an MBC ministry that provides food for people in our local community. Our children also contributed many food donations.
May: Our children gave $1631.25 to God to be used to help kids in financial need go to our summer Sports Camp. We specifically prayed for provision for 30 half scholarships. This collection enables us to extend financial aid to 34 children!
How do we select our Missions Projects each year? We have several criteria we review in choosing our projects. Our non-negotiable requirements include:
- The organization or individual(s) must be aligned with MBC Core Values
- The project supports either MBC, the local community, the country, or the world and there is a variety amongst the projects selected in a given year
- We know specifically how the funds collected are going to be used (ex. purchase new Bibles)
We also have flexible criteria where we look to meet at least one of the following:
- The project is connected to MBC in some way (ex. MBC-sponsored ministry like Daybreak)
- The project enables partnership between MBC ministries (ex. Turkey Outreach)
- The project lends itself to the whole family participating together (ex. Operations Christmas Child)
- The project can be made real and tangible for children to understand and connect to
- The project encourages the concept of one child giving to help another child
Sometimes our projects include collecting items. We have guidelines for that, too:
- Collection does not compete with another MBC-wide collection.
- Collection encourages the whole family to participate together.
- Items collected can be easily transported to their final destination.
- No back-to-back donation collections from month to month if possible.
Do you sponsor individuals going on missions trips?
Generally, no. The reason for this is we have so many staff, volunteers, and families connected to Kid’s Quest going on missions trips every year that it would not be fair to single out a few to raise their support for them, even for an MBC-sponosored trip. Supporting individuals also typically doesn’t meet most of our flexible criteria. We do on occassion allow our volunteers to pass out support letters only to those they personally know. So you may see a letter from your child’s leader from time to time but it is not going out to any other class and it is not connected to our monthly missions projects.
