Times Are Changing – We Need YOU February 12, 2009
Posted by rshort in : 7-Volunteer , comments closedI had the privilege of growing up as a child right here at McLean Bible Church. In fact that’s my baby picture in the banner above! Times have definitely changed the face of children’s ministry today – Kid’s Quest is not the Sunday School I grew up with.
I do not mean to imply that Sunday School of the past was run poorly or that teachers cared less about children. I had amazingly wonderful and loving teachers who poured God’s love out to me every week and helped shape my walk with Christ. This, thankfully, has not changed!
What I mean is, how we approach children’s ministry, how we engage children in discovering who God is and how we guide them on their life-long quest of becoming fully devoted followers of Christ, has radically changed. While we still hold to the same core beliefs that were valued in our past, we believe there is also value in presenting God’s truths in meaningful ways that are relevant to children living in the Washington D.C. area today. This translates to Kid’s Quest employing new strategies for children’s ministry that we feel will be effective in reaching our children where they’re at.
Perhaps, like me, you grew up with an individual volunteer teaching in a roomful of kids for an hour or two and perhaps this “lone teacher” impression has led you to believe that we’re only looking for those with the gift of teaching to serve in Kid’s Quest. It’s time to shed those impressions of the past and open your eyes to the many new possibilities for you to serve within Kid’s Quest today!
Like performing? You could…sing, dance, act, emcee, do puppets, tell stories
Like interaction? You could…lead small group discussion, play games, greet, escort families, run a check-in station
Like babies? You could…hold babies, blow bubbles, play guitar or keyboard
Like being crafty? You could…prepare crafts, paint scenery, sew costumes, write/edit scripts, build sets
Like creative technical work? You could…develop web pages, create flash animation, edit videos, design promo pieces, make Power Point presentations, run a sound & tech booth
Like leading adults? You could…mentor a group of leaders, interview new recruits, give tours, lead trainings, represent us in the Connect Room
Like helping behind-the-scenes? You could…restock supplies, join the Prayer Team, manage microphones, shop, do data entry, decorate for children’s baptisms, bake a treat for our volunteer room, organize closets, take photos, wash toys
We want you to be part of our revival of how people view children’s ministry today. Your participation using your unique gifts can lead to a dynamic and energized ministry! It starts with YOU stepping forward to say “yes” to exploring how you can serve in Kid’s Quest. Serving in Kid’s Quest is an excellent way to GROW in your knowledge and faith, CONNECT with others, SHARE the transforming message of the gospel with children, and SERVE the body of McLean Bible Church. Every gift and talent is welcome! Every amount of time you have to give is welcome – we have some positions that are only 20 minutes but they make a huge difference! And even if you’re not sure you like children, we have opportunities for you, too. No matter what your impression of the past, how about working with us in building our future?

February’s Virtue – Fairness February 1, 2009
Posted by rshort in : 2-What We're Teaching , comments closedFebruary’s virtue that we’ll be teaching on in Elementary classes is Fairness: making sure that everyone is treated equally. Below is a message from Melanie Williams, editor in chief of 252 Basics, the company that writes our curriculum, on Fairness.
“That’s not fair!” Who among us has never put his hands on his hips and cried those words? Most of us have built-in fairness radar–at least when it comes to how we’re treated. But of course fairness is a two-way street. More on that in a minute.
Let’s get something else out of the way first: the words SAME and EQUAL. Sometimes SAME = EQUAL. Sometimes it does not–which is how we’re approaching the virtue of fairness. Think about it this way: fairness is NOT about treating people THE SAME. Because God created us in His image (Genesis 1:27), we are alike in some ways, but different in others. Apart from obvious physical differences, we have different personalities, skills and talents, likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. Because we’re different, we have different NEEDS. And because we have different needs, we don’t all necessarily need to be treated the same. (Example: I bet you and your siblings are not all the same. You are different in some ways. Which means your parents needed to do some things differently for each of you in order to parent you in the way you needed. Right?) So, fairness is not about treating people the same. Instead, fairness IS about treating people EQUALLY. Because God created us, He loves each of us–dearly and without favoritism. So much so that He sent His one and only Son to die for us (John 3:16), regardless of our sex, age, race, ethnicity, or nationality. As Peter said, “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right” (Acts 10:34-35, NIV). Thank goodness God is fair!
Back to that two-way street thing: As dearly loved children of God, He wants us to be imitators of Him (Ephesians 5:1). “As believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favoritism” (James 2:1, NIV). In other words, don’t unfairly favor one person OR unfairly “disfavor” another. So this month, we’ll be going to the “Fair Grounds,” where everyone is treated with respect.
Week 1: Treat everyone fairly because everyone’s important to God.
(The principle of fairness, James 2)
Week 2: Treat everyone fairly–even those who are different.
(The parable of the good Samaritan, Luke 10)
Week 3: Treat everyone fairly–even your enemies.
(Saul and Ananias, Acts 9)
Week 4: Show God’s love to everyone because He wants everyone to know Him.
(Jesus’ last orders to the disciples, Matthew 28; Acts 1)
