Who is God exactly?  How can we know He exists?  And since we can’t see Him, how do we really know we can trust Him?  Don’t miss the next KIDstuff on Sunday, June 7, at 12:30 pm in the Smith Center, as we explore Faith: deciding to trust in what you can’t see because of what you can see.  We’ll  learn that we can believe in a God we can’t see because we can see what God has made.  Save this date because this will be the last KIDstuff of the school year!

What is KIDstuff?

KIDstuff kicks off the elementary program’s virtue of the month, the core teaching theme, for Kindergarteners through 5th Graders and their parents, through energetic music, zany skits, and dramatic storytelling.  This is a great opportunity for parents to be directly engaged in what their child is learning so they can discuss further at home.  While the program is geared for elementary-age children, the whole family is welcome to worship and learn God’s word together.

Got friends who don’t know Jesus as their personal savior?

KIDstuff is a fun and non-threatening way to encourage someone to think about their beliefs.  Consider using this month’s virtue, Faith, as a starting point for spiritual conversations with another family by inviting them to join you.

Got a rising Kindergartener?

This is a great way to introduce your child to our elementrary program.  Why not bring them for a sneak peek?

“Do not let your hearts be troubled.  Trust in God; trust also in me.  In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you.  I am going there to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”  John 14:1-3

Kid’s Quest is partnering with Uncharted Waters, a sports outreach ministry, to present a Sports Camp for children completing Kindergarten – 4th Grade July 27-31, 5:00 pm – 8:15 pm at Fairfax Christian School.

Our theme is “The Great Comeback” based on John 14:1-3.  Children will learn about having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the promise of Heaven through daily Bible stories, personal testimonies from their Coaches, and sport illustrations.  Along with strong Christ-centered teaching, children will also learn sports skills that will build their confidence in the sport of their choice: basketball, soccer, or cheerleading.

Cost is $95 per child; scholarships are available.*  Click here to go to the website to register.  Space is limited.  Register early!

CAN YOU HELP?  We need volunteers to lead small groups, RNs and LPNs, parking attendants, check-in helpers, photographers, and more.

*For May’s children’s offering, we are trusting God to raise scholarships for 30 children in financial need to go to KQ Sports Camp.  Please share with your children how their money gifts to God will be used to help their friends go to camp where they will learn about Jesus.

For questions or to volunteer, contact: Abigail Gustine, 703/639-2000, x3150 or abigail.gustine@mcleanbible.org.

May’s Virtue – Obedience May 3, 2009

May’s virtue that we’ll be teaching on in Elementary classes is Obedience: trusting those who lead you by doing what you are asked to do.  Below is a message from Melanie Williams, editor in chief of 252 Basics, the company that writes our curriculum, on Obedience.

Stop! Have you given much thought to the fact that obedience, which is trusting those who lead you by doing what you’re asked to do, is one of those “different” virtues? God is God; He is the ultimate Authority. No one outranks Him. So He doesn’t obey anyone, right? However, Jesus obeyed His Father (John 9:4), and it’s certainly a proper response from us toward God. In fact, “this is love for God: to obey his commands” (1 John 5:3, NIV). What a premium God places on obedience! He would rather have our obedience than sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22).

But, oh my, what a difficult time we have obeying! And that difficulty is not limited to childhood. (How many traffic laws have YOU broken, for instance, in your driving career?) So of course the Bible is full of examples of people obeying (and disobeying) God and the consequences thereof! Remember Jonah? Could there be many more vivid examples of what happens when we obey God? Or the fact that there are consequences when we don’t? It’s a good thing God is patient and forgiving and the God of second chances.

So this month we’re focusing on the who and the why and the how of obedience. Not because God is waiting to zap us when we cross the line (like a traffic cop lying in wait with his radar gun), but because He cares for us. He wants a relationship with us and for us to have a part in His big plan, so He wants to help us avoid breakdowns, dead ends, and even the minor potholes along the way. So here’s the lineup for the month:

Week 1: It’s always better to do what God says the first time.  (The story of Jonah; Jonah 1-3)

Week 2: How I obey my parents shows what I think about God.  (Children, obey your parents; Ephesians 6:1-3)

Week 3: Obeying your leaders can help you know God.  (The Lord calls Samuel; 1 Samuel 3:1-19)

Week 4: It’s right to listen to God because He is GOD.  (Adam and Eve disobey; Genesis 3:1-24)

Week 5: How can you know what to do if you don’t know what God says? (the wise and foolish builders; Matthew 7:24-29)
