Emergency Evacuation March 29, 2010

Posted by rshort in : 6-Operations , comments closed

As parents, our children’s safety is often on our minds and affects our decisions about the types of places our children go or activities they participate in.  But the church is one of those places many of us don’t ever consider being a place where an emergency could occur.  Do you know what would happen if there were a major emergency at MBC during services and we needed to evacuate immediately?  Did your heart just skip a beat in panic at not knowing the answer to this question?

We want you to know that the MBC staff, and we in Kid’s Quest, have this concern on our minds as well so we have established a building evacuation plan to safely exit all children in our care during services from the building.  The first thing our staff and volunteer leaders would do is escort all children from the building immediately.  We have pre-mapped primary and secondary routes for exiting which are displayed on the wall of every classroom if you ever wish to review them.  Each age group is escorted to a designated holding area outside the building (see below).

We ask that you, parents, proceed to your nearest emergency exit and locate your children outside the building in their designated holding areas as opposed to running directly to their classrooms.  We understand the desire to check on and retrieve your children immediately, however, moving in the opposite direction of everyone trying to exit congests the hallways and inhibits our ability to safely and quickly exit.

If you happen to already be in the same area as your child, please be aware that our security check-out procedures still stand and we will not check children out before exiting the building.  You may walk with the class to the holding area and when we’ve been given approval by emergency personnel to dismiss children, you will be permitted to check out by showing your security receipt.  The main reasons we need to await approval from emergency personnel to check your children out is that families trying to immediately leave the grounds can endanger those still exiting the building into the roadway and parking lots and congest the areas where emergency vehicles and personnel may need to go.  A Kid’s Quest staff member in each holding area will have an emergency radio with them to keep us in contact with emergency personnel and those in the other Kid’s Quest holding areas.

Below is the list of the designated evacuatoin holding areas:

Saturday 6:30 pm:

Sunday 9:00 am, 10:45 am, & 12:30 pm:

Sunday Evening (Awana and Frontline) 5:00 pm & 5:30 pm:

The Preschool Curriculum is written by our Preschool Team and is on a 3-year cycle.  Parents and guardians of preschoolers receive a take-home card to help reinforce the lesson taught at home.  They include a recap of the lesson, the “So What” question and answer to help your child understand Biblical principles, and a Treasure Box Verse.  Additional information just for parents and guardians is on the backside of the card.  Consider setting aside one night in the middle of the week to review this card with your Preschooler.  If you have questions about the Preschool curriculum, contact Kristin Tomlinson, Preschool Team Leader, at 703-770-2908 or kristin.tomlinson@mcleanbible.org.

KIDstuff in Review March 12, 2010

Posted by rshort in : 4-Events , comments closed

We had another fabulous KIDstuff last Sunday!  The show kicked off with the battle cry, “Bring it on Leprechaun” as a strange beret-wearing visitor from Ireland taunted that his KIDstuff was better than ours.  He put forth a good fight as he unveiled his amazing Irish step dancers with their green light-up shades.  But our KIDteam was just as incredibly talented as they led us in rockin’ worship.

We learned about honesty and the terrible trouble lies get us into through several stories.  First, Mr. Adam, face covered in frosting, lied about eating Mr. Mike’s cake that he had made specifically for a cake baking contest.  Mr. Adam finally confessed his misdeed and our two hosts were friends once more.

In the Clubhouse Taylor lied about losing her mom’s camera tripod, saying it was stolen, and she and Sam spent the whole afternoon stressed out as they tried to cover up the truth.  Mom discovered what really happened when she accidentally sat down on her tripod, forcing Taylor to admit her lie and apologize.

We saw a video about a girl named Emma who got into a big mess when she lied about being sick to get out of going to a friend’s Birthday party.  In the end she learned that a half truth is a full lie!

Then Detective Sam Shovel put Reuben, a man named after a sandwich, on the hot seat as he investigated the truth behind the disappearance of Reuben’s brother Joseph.  Reuben claimed Joseph had been attacked and killed by a wild animal but as we learned in the Bible, Genesis 37:17b-36 and 45:25-28, Joseph had really been sold into slavery in Egypt.  Reuben was quite relieved to be forgiven by his father, Jacob, for hiding the truth.

We also had a visit from Terry Talentworth and his friend, Terrance the Turtle, who encouraged us to trade tokens of truth with our family which Mr. Mike explained in more detail.  Every family received a Trust Buck upon leaving and was asked to play “Pass the Buck” all month.  Whenever a family member sees another family member demonstrating the virtue honesty, they pass them the buck.  The buck passes back and forth between family members as they build trust in one another.

We’ll be continuing to learn about Honesty, choosing to be truthful in whatever you say and do, in Kid’s Quest classes for the remainder of the month.  Use the Refrigerator Door cards to spark discussion around your dinner table and encourage your kids to use their God Time cards to spend some time reflecting on their own.  If you’d like to dig deeper, pick up the Honesty Family Times Virtue Pack, available for $10 in THE BOOKstore or online.

KIDstuff – Honesty

SAVE THESE DATES!

KIDstuff will be taking a short break for Easter but we’ll be back on Sundays, May 2 and June 6, at 12:30 pm in the Smith Center.
