Shine Like Stars May 21, 2010

“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life—in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing. But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.”  – Philippians 2:12-18

Tonight we honor all the Kid’s Quest volunteers at An Evening with the Stars, our annual volunteer celebration event. We are so grateful for God’s provision of these faithful servants to serve families and support our ministry each and every week. Check out this story from one of our star volunteers in Kindergarten, Julie Jordan:

“I remember at the beginning of the year when we were just beginning small groups and how I had to pull answers out of the kids. I would ask questions about the Bible story they had just heard in Large Group and sometimes it seemed as though they had completely zoned out the entire time! Now, instead of me asking all of the questions, they are asking me questions! They hear the story, comprehend its lesson, and want to learn more about how that story makes a difference to them!!! And they are only five years old! The first time it happened I was so shocked I didn’t even know how to answer them really. I hope that years from now I get to see who these kids become, because I know they are going to be amazing people.”

Doesn’t that sound like someone you’d want in your child’s life? Julie is one of many amazing shining stars in Kid’s Quest whose deepest desire is to serve God by partnering with you to help your children become fully devoted followers of Christ. We would not have a children’s ministry without their service. So this weekend, please pray as a family for your child’s leaders and take a moment to personally tell them thank you for all they do to “hold out the Word of Life.”

P.S.

A very special thank you to everyone who contributed their time, talents, treats, gifts, and donations to making the event fun and memorable.

Jill’s House May 20, 2010

Jill

Last fall Kid’s Quest supported Jill’s House as one of our children’s missions projects. Every Sunday since then, as my family passes the construction site to enter the church parking lot, my kids ask the very same question, “When is Jill’s House going to open?” This most often leads to them arguing with each other over exactly when it’s going to open. ”It looks like they’re almost done, Mommy. I think they’re going to open tomorrow!”

And so I find it quite humourous that this month, as we support Jill’s House once again, is the month that elementary classes are learning about the virtue Patience!  If anyone has had to learn about waiting, it’s got to be the many people involved in making Jill’s House a reality. They’ve been working hard on this dream since 2003. Ha! My kids think waiting a week is such a looooooooonnnnngg time. But 7 years? I think that stretches the patience of most adults, too. So I encourage you to use this month’s missions project as an opportunity to talk to your kids further about patience. I also encourage you to pray as a family for all the kids with special needs who are anxiously awaiting to be served by Jill’s House.

This month’s memory verse is Ecclesiastes  7:8 “The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride.” It’s so exciting to partner with Jill’s House again as they enter the final stretch. I know myself and my kids will celebrate and share in the joy of its opening because we’ve had this opportunity to support this project and pray for the kids who will be blessed by it.

An Exercise in Patience May 14, 2010

Posted by rshort in : 4-Events , comments closed

Ring of Patience

At the May KIDstuff we gave out glow rings called “The Ring of Patience” with instructions to parents that kids should demonstrate patience at home in order to earn their ring. And that rings should be returned, uncracked, to the June 6 KIDstuff so they can be cracked all together at an Ice Cream Party celebration afterwards. Little did we know that many of you would get to exercise patience immediately as we RAN OUT of rings to give everyone who attended! So…if you’re coming to the June 6 KIDstuff, 12:30 pm in the Smith Center, any families who missed receiving a ring OR any whose kids have accidentally cracked their rings already can pick one up this weekend, May 22/23, near the elementary check-in stations.

June 6 will be the last KIDstuff of the season so we hope you’re planning to attend and inviting all your friends with families to come, too! Rising Kindergarteners are also welcome to come to the show for a sneak peek at Elementary before they move up in July. We’ll be learning about the virtue of Responsibility. To view clips from previous shows, visit our You Tube channel at youtube.com/mbckidsquest.

And don’t forget to plan on staying a little longer afterwards for the Ice Cream Party in The Rock. Bring your camera to take a photo of your kids with their favorite cast members.

Toddler Curriculum May 12, 2010

Posted by rshort in : 2-What We're Teaching , comments closed

This weekend we begin a new unit in Toddlers Navigators & Little Adventurers classes: God Helps Peter And Paul.

May 15/16: Paul Meets Jesus (Acts 9:1-20)

May 22/23: Paul’s Escape (Acts 9:20-28)

May 29/30: Peter Helps Dorcas (Acts 9:36-43)

Navigators and Little Adventurers use a Bible-based curriculum called Gospel Light. Parents and guardians of Navigators & Little Adventurers receive a take-home page called FamilyTime each week to help reinforce the lesson taught at home. They include a recap of the lesson, simple discussion questions,  family activities,  and a section just for parents. Consider setting aside one night in the middle of the week to review this page with your Toddler.

If you have questions about the Toddler curriculum, contact Janie Cotone, Nursery/Toddler Team Leader, at janie.cotone@mcleanbible.org or 703-639-2000, x1014.
