2010 Christmas Recruiting 259x200

The holiday season is coming up fast — too fast! — and we’re anticipating both an increase in visiting families between December 24-January 2 and a decrease in our volunteer force as leaders take time off to travel to see their families.  Could you help us receive all our regular and visiting families by serving in Kid’s Quest during the holidays?

Christmas Eve, December 24:

Sunday, December 26: 9:00am, 10:45 am, 12:30 pm, or 5:30 pm:

Saturday, January 1, 6:30 pm:

Think Orange…Think What? November 16, 2010

What If…

What if the primary mission of the church is not to help the family and the number one priority of the family is not to go to church?

What if they are both designed to work together to show a generation who God is?

IT’S NOT EITHER / OR.

IT’S BOTH / AND.

Earlier this year we launched a new logo (above) to reflect our ministry philosophy to bring church and family together for a child’s spiritual growth. Since launching our new logo you may have seen or heard the phrase “THINK ORANGE” used in Kid’s Quest. Or you may have caught sight of the Kid’s Quest staff wearing very bright yellow shirts – how could you miss us? It’s not a fashion statement – it’s a strategy! So why the color ORANGE?  What does it mean to THINK ORANGE? Watch our video to find out!

THINK ORANGE is a strategy for implementing our ministry’s vision and philosophy. When you THINK ORANGE, you rethink the way you minister to children. Visit our website at mbctysons.org/thinkorange to learn how THINK ORANGE impacts not only our leaders, but you, too. We also encourage you to become a part of the greater community of churches that are THINKING ORANGE together by following the Orange Parent’s blog at orangeparents.org if you’re a parent and/or the Orange Leader’s blog at whatisorange.org/orangeleaders if you serve with children. We hope you, too, will be inspired to THINK ORANGE, with us!

P.S. – In September Kid’s Quest had the privilege of hosting the Orange Tour, a gathering of church leaders from all over who are implementing the THINK ORANGE strategy in their ministries. It was a great opoprtunity to network with other churches and learn from top leaders in children’s and youth ministry. Enjoy seeing a few pictures of this event:

Coats For Kids November 12, 2010

Coats For Kids 200x200

For our November-December Missions Project we’re supporting The Clothing Shop, an MBC Ministry, through our children’s offering and collecting used coats for kids. The main goal of the Clothing Shop is not to give clothes to people in need – it is to tell people of God’s love for them and how they can have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. On Thursday nights and every other Saturday, about 100 people from the community come to The Clothing Shop. Most have never attended MBC but there is a Gospel presentation in Spanish and English every time the shop is open.

Coats do not need to be in perfect condition.  Nothing goes to waste!  The Clothing Shop coordinates with other organizations so that any items that can’t be used “as is” are either mended or recycled for reusable parts. Offering received goes towards purchasing coats, grocery gift cards, underwear, and particular family’s needs (ex. house burned down). Drop off coats in the collection bins at Kid’s Quest check-in stations.

For more about The Clothing Shop, contact Faith Battle at 703-639-2000, x1026 or email clothingshop@mcleanbible.org.

P.S.

This month’s virtue we’re teaching in elementary is Service: lending a hand to help someone else. While it may be easier for you to sort through and gather the extra coats on your own, we encourage you not to pass up the opporturunity for a teachable moment with your kids. Have your kids participate in finding all the extra coats hanging out in your closets that are no longer needed.  Then share with them how giving these coats to others to use this winter is one way they can put the virtue of service into action.

NOTE: Kid’s Quest missions projects are part of Start Where You Are, a Tysons Campus initiative to encourage our congregation to take advantage of opportunities to love our neighbors – anyone God has brought into your life – by a) doing something good that meets a practical need, b) sharing practical advice from the Bible, or c) explaining the message of Christ in a way that makes sense.

Service November 5, 2010

November’s virtue that we’re teaching on in Elementary classes is Service: leanding a hand to someone else. Below is a message from Melanie Williams, editor in chief of 252 Basics, the company that writes our curriculum, on Service:

What in the World Are You Doing?

What in the world are you doing that’s more than you have to do? Jesus did more than He had to for people, and He wants us to go the extra mile, too (Matthew 5:41). Every day we have the choice to “get by” or to go the extra mile. When we do more than we have to for others, what does that show them about God?

What in the world are you doing to help someone others won’t help? Jesus always saw people and met their needs, regardless of their race, religion, or nationality. He wants us to be “good neighbors,” too (Luke 10:30-37). Every day we have the choice of living more like the Samaritan and less like the Levite. When we LOOK and DO for others, what does that reveal about how Jesus sees them? What does it reveal about what He’s done for them?

What in the world are you doing to put others first? Jesus put others first in countless ways, and He wants us to do the same (John 13:1-17). Me first or you first? Our words and actions answer that question every day. Do our words and actions help others experience Jesus’ love?

What in the world are you doing that only God knows? Jesus said that motives matter. The reason behind our service counts. If we serve in order to show off, that’s all the reward we can expect (Matthew 6:1-4). But if we serve “secretly,” then what will happen?

So, help kids think about what in the world they are doing.

Want to more? Hear Reggie Joiner speak on how Service is a reflection of God’s character working in us to change the world around us. He then explores how the 252 Basics Bible stories will work together to unpack God’s truth in a way that makes the virtue come to life.

VIRTUE VIDEO: Service (July 2010) from Orange on Vimeo.

NOVEMBER SPECIAL: For November we have decided to teach the virtue that was originally released by 252 for July. Since we do a separate summer curriculum, we didn’t teach this virtue in July but felt it should be included now. Since CUE Boxes were released in September, there is no CUE Box for Service. However, the home resource we used to provide, Family Times Virtue Packs, is available and ties directly into the lessons we will teach on service. These are available for November only in The Bookstore and MBC Cafe as well at KIDstuff this Sunday, Nov 7.
