Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start in helping your kids grasp the full significance of who Jesus is. That’s why Kid’s Quest offers Starting Zone, a 4-step path to equip parents to guide their children towards starting a personal relationship with Jesus that leads to children’s baptism, a celebration when kids are ready to publicly declare their decision to trust Jesus. The first step is to attend one of the Start Your Engines classes. Classes are for both parents and kids to attend together. The Gospel message is presented and parents receive next-step tools to use at home. Our age recommendation is 7 years & up but you can bring your kids whenever you feel they’re ready and you can repeat the class as many times as you like to help solidify your child’s growing faith. Classes are free but please register in advance so we can make sure we have enough materials for all participants.

Support Your Child’s Small Group February 18, 2011

As a children’s ministry, we aim to challenge kids to live differently on Monday as a result of their time in Kid’s Quest on Saturday or Sunday. We employ both a Large Group and Small Group format to accomplish this.

Large Group tends to get all the attention because it has all the bells and whistles of music, lights, video, puppets, actors, and pop-in surprises. In Preschool kids meet with Green Bird and Yellow Bird in the Tree House and enjoy hearing about their misadventures. In Elementary kids get moving with rockin’ worship and fun dramatizations. However, while Large Group time is valuable and has the important task of teaching kids God’s Word and what God has to say about how they live their lives, it’s not the complete story.

A story is incomplete if you skip the last page. Or to say it like Pastor Lon Solomon, if you haven’t asked “So What?” you’ve missed the point. That’s where Small Groups come in. Small Groups are the dynamic personalization of what is taught in Large Group and only a Small Group Leader is equipped to help kids apply lessons to their real-life situations.

OK, you’re probably already whispering your own “So What?” about now. Why are we taking the time to share this with you? Glad you asked! On Sunday, March 20, our Early Childhood and Elementary Small Group Leaders have an opportunity to attend training with a professional ministry consultant to learn how to lead small groups in a way that transforms kid’s lives. We believe that kids, just like adults, need a place of fellowship and prayer and that no Large Group production can match the power or influence of a Christ-centered, Biblically-based small group.

But we need your help! In order to free up our Small Group Leaders to attend this training, we need 88 helpers to commit to covering for their current groups on Sunday, March 20. Don’t worry, we’ll be doing a slightly longer Large Group lesson and simpler Small Group activities to make it really easy for helpers to step in for this one day. Is your child’s small group worth an hour and a half of your time? We sincerely hope you believe it is. Below are the options and contacts for saying yes to supporting your child’s small group and investing your time in his or her Small Group Leader.

Family Service Project February 10, 2011

Rice and Beans-Small

It’s been fairly amusing walking the halls of Kid’s Quest on a weekend lately as it’s not uncommon to hear a child giggling and shouting “Rice and Beans!” This month we’ve been continuing the missions project we started in Janaury, supporting The Shepherd’s Food Pantry, through our children’s offering and collecting 3-pound bags of rice and any type of bean. We are specifically collecting rice and beans because these are the most often requested food items among the families who rely on the the Food Pantry’s services. We’re so pleased to see kids catching onto the Tysons Campus initiative, Start Where You Are, to love our neighbors by doing something good that meets a practical need. Your families’ offering gifts of rice and beans are going a long way to feed hungry families in our community. Collection bins are located at Kid’s Quest Check-in Stations through February 26/27. Please make sure items are not expired.

If this project has resonated with your kids, we’d like to suggest taking it one step further for another teachable moment. The Food Pantry is looking for families who would like to serve together by packing boxes of food for other families in need. If you liked participating in our Operations Christmas Child Assembly Day, you might find this an equally rewarding family service project. If you’re interested, email foodpantry@mcleanbible.org for details on the next packing day dates and times.

A couple of weeks ago we showed the kids part 2 of our Rice & Beans video series in Large Group and will be launching part 3 this weekend.  Our final video will be shown the following weekend and you can catch it on our YouTube channel later, youtube.com/mbckidsquest. We think you’ll enjoy them as much as the kids have and suspect we might even hear a few of you singing out, “Rice & Beans” in the hallways next!

Do you like surprises? Get ready for BIG SURPRISES to be unveiled at KIDstuff this Sunday, February 6. You just might go CRAZY!

Crazy with KINDNESS, that is, because that’s the new virtue that we’ll be teaching: showing others they are valuable by how you treat them. There will be lots of crazy fun and surprises for you and your family so join us at 12:30 pm in the Smith Center. Be sure to invite your family’s friends, too!

The Kid’s Quest store will also be open starting at noon in the Smith Center lobby and there will be a surprise there, too! Look for a very special guest. And while you’re there check out CUE Box, a resource to help parents spark spiritual conversations at home, and kid’s worship CD’s, a great way to learn the songs your kids are singing in Kid’s Quest and KIDstuff.
