Elementary Summer Fun Days July 29, 2011
Posted by rshort in : 1-Hot News , comments closedAs part of our summer programming, elementary kids have been divided into the following teams whose names play off our Soul Food theme:
Each team has a bucket and win marbles to fill their bucket through participation in Large Group. At the end of each Large Group, the buckets are weighed on a giant scale. So far the kids have really gotten into the competition and look forward to the weighing of the buckets to see whose team is victorious.
Your kids can help earn marbles for their team’s bucket by coming dressed for these weekly Summer Fun themes:
- July 30/31: Crazy Hair Day – Show off your wackiest or most colorful do!
- Aug 6/7: Hat Day - Doesn’t matter if it’s zany or all business, wear some kind of hat.
- Aug 13/14: Patriotic/Camo Wear Day – Demonstrate your American pride with stars and stripes or camouflage.
- Aug 20/21: Western Day – Yeehaw, round up some wild west outfits!
- Aug 27/28: Bible Character Day – So many people to chose from. Re-read your favorite Bible stories together to pick one!

This summer Kid’s Quest elementary presents an 8-week series called “Soul Food” that will stir up kid’s appetites for Godly goodies. The series is based on Isaiah 55:2 (NLT): “Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen, and I will tell you where to get food that is good for the soul!”
Click here to see a video preview of the series and here’s a quick overview below of each week’s main point and memory verse:
Week 1, July 9-10:
- “How’d You Like Them Apples?”
- To love God means that we OBEY His commandments.
- 1 John 5:3a
Week 2, July 16-17:

- My dear friends, you should be quick to LISTEN and slow to speak or to get angry.
- James 1:19
Week 6, August 13-14:
- “S’Mores and More”
- My sheep RECOGNIZE my voice; I know them and they follow me.
- John 10:27
Week 7, August 20-21:

Let’s Jump! July 15, 2011

Do you remember the first time you jumped off the high dive at your neighborhood pool? I still remember the tingling sensations in my arms and legs as I made my climb up, up, up the tall ladder. I remember the rapid thumping of my heart and tightening in my stomach as I slowly slid one foot in front of the other till I reached the end of the board. And I remember being overcome with sheer terror as I peered over the board’s edge and got my first glimpse at just how far down, down, down that water was. I was seriously tempted to crawl back down the ladder. But I didn’t. Instead, I closed my eyes and jumped in. It was both terrifying and exhilarating at the same time as I made my big splash. And then…pure joy as I kicked back up to the surface. I did it! I was so proud of myself. After that first jump, there was no stopping me from doing it over and over again.
Today I had a similar experience that brought this memory of taking my first jump off the high dive to mind so vividly. Today, I volunteered to serve in Kid’s Quest…for the whole summer…with boys. What have I done? I’m still trying to overcome the feeling that I’ve made a colossal mistake. The urge to call back and say “no way” keeps attacking me like a pesky gnat in my face. But then I remember that first jump. Jumping in was frightening but it was such a thrill after I did it. I sincerely hope God has something equally as thrilling He wants to do in me or through me this summer as I take this leap of faith.
Would you jump in with me? Seriously, we need more parents stepping in for the summer. Last Sunday there were so many boys in one age group that over a dozen of them were sitting on the window ledge and floor because there weren’t enough seats. There were plenty of chairs to create another small group in the empty room next door but no more volunteers to open it. Don’t worry, we did find a temporary solution for those boys (and starting this Sunday, that’s my group!), but my point is, there are kids who really need us, as in you and me, to help provide the best environment for the deepening of their faith this summer. I am not the world’s greatest small group leader. But I care about my son’s spiritual growth. I care about the boys who are in his small group with him. I care about the volunteers who have come before me during the school year and will be coming back again this fall. I care about what we all might miss if I just ignore the need. So I’m closing my eyes and jumping in.
Take the plunge with me. Small groups are our greatest area of need right now. If you’d like to learn more about where you could jump in, contact Erin Bay at erin.bay@mcleanbible.org.
Enjoy a story from another volunteer.
Helping Kids in D.C. July 13, 2011

Although school’s only been out a few weeks, local stores are already stocking their shelves with supplies for the next school year in preparation for the frenzy of parents taking advantage of the big back-to school supply sales in August. However, even with reduced prices, there are many kids living in the Lincoln Heights area of Washington D.C. whose families don’t know how they’re going to afford supplies for their kids this fall. The medium household income is only $24,000 and the majority of households are headed by single moms. The community is plagued with drugs, violence, and crime, leaving individuals living in Lincoln Heights with great physical and spiritual needs.
The kids in Lincoln Heights face some harsh realities, like witnessing murders and drug sales right in front of their homes. But we can help make their dim reality a little brighter. For July and August, Kid’s Quest is designating our children’s offering to make an impact on secular Washington through an auxilary MBC ministry called Daybreak. Daybreak is a Christian organization dedicated to serving the children, families and individuals on an on-going basis in the community of Lincoln Heights, a low-income housing community in the northeast quadrant of Washington, D.C. We’ll be using your children’s offering specifically to purchase school supplies (note: we are not actually collecting school supplies). Volunteers from Daybreak and Frontline will package the school supplies in backpacks and distribute them to Lincoln Heights families at the end of the summer. Helping take care of this physical need goes a long way in opening the hearts of unbelieving families to the Gospel message. So please pray with us that our gifts will lead to many kids in D.C. coming to know Jesus in a real and personal way.
