Coats For Kids November 11, 2011

Coats For Kids 200x200

For our November-December Missions Project we’re supporting The Clothing Shop, an MBC Ministry, through our children’s offering and collecting unwanted used coats for kids. The main goal of the Clothing Shop is not to give clothes to people in need – it is to tell people of God’s love for them and how they can have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. On Thursday nights and every other Saturday, about 100 people from the community come to The Clothing Shop. Most have never attended MBC but there is a Gospel presentation in Spanish and English every time the shop is open.

Coats do not need to be in perfect condition. Nothing goes to waste! The Clothing Shop coordinates with other organizations so that any items that can’t be used “as is” are either mended or recycled for reusable parts. Offering received goes towards purchasing coats, grocery gift cards, underwear, and particular family’s needs (ex. house burned down). Drop off coats in the collection bins at Kid’s Quest check-in stations. For more about The Clothing Shop, contact Faith Battle at 703-639-2000, x1026 or email clothingshop@mcleanbible.org.

P.S.

While it may be easier for you to sort through and gather the unwanted coats on your own, we encourage you not to pass up the opporturunity for a teachable moment with your kids. Have your kids participate in finding all the extra coats hanging out in your closets that no longer fit.

NOTE: Kid’s Quest missions projects are part of Start Where You Are, a Tysons Campus initiative to encourage our congregation to take advantage of opportunities to love our neighbors – anyone God has brought into your life – by a) doing something good that meets a practical need, b) sharing practical advice from the Bible, or c) explaining the message of Christ in a way that makes sense.

KIDstuff Returns November 8, 2011

KIDstuff Nov 2011

Bring the family to the next KIDstuff show on Sunday, November 13, 12:30 pm in the Smith Center. KIDstuff is a fun and engaging 45-minute creative arts production that teaches elementary children and their families about God through live theater, rockin’ worship music, video, dance, and zany audience participation games. Each show hi-lights a virtue to build character in kids. This same virtue is taught in our weekend elementary classes for that month. This time we’ll be learning about the virtue of Gratitude: letting others know you see how they’ve helped you.

Although each show’s theme centers on the same virtues taught in our elementary classes, siblings of all ages as well as friends and their families are all welcome to come and participate. The show’s content can stand alone without your child having attended an elementary class before. Whole family participation enables parents to learn the virtues and have continuing conversations at home.

Can’t wait till November 13? How about doing a little KIDstuff Shuffle to get ready for the big show!

Don’t forget to also stop by the Kid’s Quest store in the Smith Center lobby before or after the show for our CUE Box for Christmas Super Sale! CUE Box is a box full of family activities centered around teaching Biblical virtues. They make great family Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers!

Gratitude: Take Time To Give Thanks November 4, 2011

Gratitude

This weekend, November 5/6, Elementary kids will start learning a new virtue, Gratitude: letting others know you you see how they’ve helped you. Our memory verse for the month comes from 1 Thessalonians 5:18: “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Help your child dig deeper by having intentional conversations at home that reinforce the lessons they’re hearing in Kid’s Quest. This month, talk about these questions as a family during meal times, driving in the car, or at bed time:

1. Have you ever been ungrateful even though you were given a good thing? How would you do things differently next time?

2. Name 10 things you are grateful for right now.

3. What is something our family can do to take time for gratitude every day?

Do you sometimes find it hard to practice daily gratitude after facing a day full of stress? Does that stress, at times, spill over onto your family? Perhaps you need a duck pond. A what? You heard it, a duck pond! Find a dose of parenting encouragement as well as the meaning of the duck pond in the November podcast on the Orange Parents blog: http://www.orangeparents.org/parent-link-live/, featuring author Carey Nieuwhof.
